Good times, bad times

I’ve experienced easy times and challenging times, and fully expect to experience both in the future. Some easy times were all too short; some challenging ones lasted way too long. Or so it seemed at the time. Possibly like you, I would rather experience only the easy times, believing that the challenging times aren’t in any way beneficial or worth experiencing. Most of us call those challenging times ‘bad’ and those easy ones ‘good’.

Yet, I know better: I know that if I were able to observe my life in a distant way – from the perspective of, say, some universal energy, I might view challenging times, not as ‘bad’, and easy times not as ‘good’. I’d see them as a part of the fabric of life and change.

If you haven’t heard or read the parable of the farmer who’s comment for everything was “good or bad … who’s to say”, it’s worth reading. The main thing I get from it is that what seems good at one time will very likely turn into a challenge at another time, and vice versa.

Good and bad, easy and challenging: the warp and woof of living.

Quote of the Week

By then I knew that everything good and bad left an emptiness when it stopped. But if it was bad, the emptiness filled up by itself. If it was good you could only fill it by finding something better."- Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast
