Ears of the Heart
I came across a Latin phrase the other day that sounded like something we could all use today. Today, so many of us are protecting ourselves from accusations and judgments because of misunderstandings or the heightened sensitivities of others.
There seems little or no room for allowing for mistakes or alternative interpretations.
The phrase came out of a rule of Saint Benedict: Obsculta, o fili, praecepta magistri, et incline aurun cordis tui; meaning Listen, my son, and turn the ear of your heart to the precepts of your master.
Turn the ear of your heart. Such a lovely sentiment: to hear the other’s heart from my heart. To open my heart to the other and take in what the other person means rather than what I initially hear.
A beautiful way of hearing, and one that I plan on taking into 2024 with me.
Quote of the Week
“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”
– Leo Buscaglia
