judgment, resentment, acceptance

I was in a social group this past weekend, and in response to a question, I said that I sometimes shut down when I’m judging, and sometimes get aggressive. Mostly, I get quiet, and feel through how and why I go to judgment.

Off to the side, someone I don’t know well sounded like they sniggered. I found myself get annoyed and – yes – judging this person up one side and down the other. Then I chuckled, took a big breath of relief, and let it go.

Judging in this context is different from, say, deciding if something in the fridge needs to be composted. In this context, judging almost always comes from feeling attacked, or insecure, or some bad feeling we’d rather not admit to ourselves. So, in my case, I deflect onto the other person, finding fault in them. Blaming them. Resenting them … instead of me.

If you find yourself judging in this way, see if you can take a moment, take in a big breath, and begin with accepting that you are wonderful just as you are, then accept the other person just as they are as well. See what happens to the judgment.
